It’s been a while since I last posted. I’ve been busy with life as always. Just as promised, on my free-time, I am working on a few cool web applications. I love prototyping and this is just my way of improving my skill-set and to put it simply, I don’t want to become too rusty over time.
This cool web application allows users to pick their favorite country teams and their predicted combination (a little late for this, since Italy had just won the World Cup this past weekend) for this year’s FIFA World Cup in Germany. I call it the World Cup Pickr! It was an idea that was being thrown around during our lunch break as we were watching the World Cup the past few weeks. I figured it would be a nice challenge to design and implement something that is dynamic and has some intuitive DHTML and AJAX components to it.
It utilizes Yahoo! User Interface Library heavily, which encapsulates a lot of sweet complex utilities and functionalities. I was inspired by Dustin Diaz’s uses of the Yahoo! User Interface Library. So I figured that I should give the library a try.
The main library utilities that I’ve incorporated so far in this application are the: Event Utility, DOM Collection, Drag and Drop Utility (extensively), and Animation Utility.
Yahoo did a great job with the Drag and Drop Utility. It was quite easy to get a hang of. The utility allows me to set affordances on the target elements smoothly without any troubles. Each team and its respective flag symbol can be dragged and dropped into a specific target slot. To ease the process, you can simply double click on each of the teams to automatically place it into its corresponding slot.
I even got Allison to help me write some simple logic in my code while I was kicking the soccer ball around with her little brother.
The only YUI library utility that I have not yet got around to is the Connection Manager. Hopefully with some spare time in these coming weeks, I will incorporate some AJAX’y element into the application just to complete the whole Web 2.0 circle! =) Furthermore, I’m also thinking of implementing the back-end of things to the application by attaching a MySQL database using PHP. I’ll keep you posted.
As always, everything is clumped up into one post…I need to figure out how to go about in term of resolving this issue… =D
In other news, about two Saturday’s ago, I was with Allison attending one of hers friends’ wedding reception. It was a Mormon wedding. It was the first Mormon wedding reception I’ve ever been to. The funny thing was that, I was the only Asian person there most of the time, and for the rest of the time, I was the only Asian male there. It was pretty low key and as I may quote Allison, “short and sweet”.
Here is a picture of her and the bride (her close friend from high school) and groom:
Here is a picture from Huntington Beach for Kim’s birthday beach party. It was fun as I had the chance to see some of my old high school friends and acquaintances that I haven’t seen in years! Most everyone is still the same.

Hey… at least let me feel like I did something useful!! :(
hehe your Pickr thingy is cool… too bad it’s a little bit late to be of much use! Maybe next World Cup it can be used… but I’m sure it was a huge learning experience for you :)
You can resolve the issue of everything being clumped into one post by posting more!!! Please? ;)
Yeah, it was short and sweet! I still can’t get over the fact that one of MY friends is now married!!
I love you!
